Wound/Ostomy Nurse Receives DAISY Award

Lynne Shopiro, Patricia Stewart, Kathy SteinmannPatricia Stewart, RN, from our Wound/Ostomy team, is the latest recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Patricia was nominated by a patient who felt that Patricia acted as an advocate and “exceptional support” during a difficult time.

The patient wrote: “Even though I was not ready to see or hear about my ostomy and wound needs after emergency surgery, Patricia gently and persistently helped me accept and work toward getting the care I need.”

Patricia offered her support to the patient even after she was discharged, instructing the patient to call whenever she needed supplies or if she had questions.

The patient was not scheduled to have nursing care for over two weeks after discharge, but Patricia worked with the care team to find nursing support for the patient within two days.

“I am truly grateful that there are professionals like Patricia Stewart who value and care about their patients throughout their recovery,” the patient said.

Thank you, Patricia, for all you do to make our patients feel comfortable and supported!

About the DAISY Award
In November 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes formed the DAISY Foundation as a way to express their profound gratitude to nurses for the work they do for patients and their families every day. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Pat died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. In 2015, Crouse became a DAISY-affiliated hospital and presents an award to a deserving nurse, selected by a committee, regularly throughout the year. The DAISY Award program at Crouse has been made possible through a donation from the Crouse Hospital Medical Staff.
