Pomeroy College of Nursing Student Receives Spirit of Nursing Award

By: Crouse News

Lacey FosterIn early 2016, Pomeroy College of Nursing alumnus Karl Schindler ’15 worked with the Crouse Health Foundation and Pomeroy College of Nursing leadership to establish the “Spirit of Nursing Award.”

The inaugural award was funded through Karl’s first paycheck as a Registered Nurse. He wanted the award to be given to a female student during her last semester/term who was also a single parent. This was Karl’s way of paying tribute to the strong female role models who inspired him throughout his nursing education and his life. Since the first “Spirit of Nursing Award” was presented in spring 2016, Karl has continued to fund this special recognition.

This year’s recipient is fourth term Evening/Weekend student, Lacey Foster.

Lacey is a mom to a young, school-aged son and currently works full-time as a LPN in a long-term care facility. She is a member of the Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honor Society and served as her cohort’s Vice President. She was instrumental in organizing the group’s mandatory service project that benefitted the CNY Diaper Bank.

One faculty member commented that “Lacey is respectful to her peers and faculty. She is responsive and participatory in class, whether in-person or virtually.” Further, “She is always engaged in activities in the Nursing Lab, practicing skills or helping others. Lacey’s current clinical instructor noted that “she has a positive attitude and her fellow students would describe her as top-notch, always willing to help, straightforward and very smart.” The instructor recalls a patient requesting to speak with her to report glowing reviews of Lacey’s care. The patient was very impressed with her kindness and compassion.

Lacey currently has a 3.55 cumulative GPA and is slated to graduate in April 2021. Our congratulations and best wishes go to Lacey, with our deepest appreciation to another special nurse, and PCON graduate, Karl Schindler.
