DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students
DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students
An acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, The DAISY Foundation was established in November 1999 honoring J. Patrick Barnes who died at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP). The nursing care Patrick received when hospitalized profoundly touched his family and The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was created.
The student award was created to recognize and celebrate nursing students for the above-and-beyond care and compassion shown to patients and their families. The DAISY Foundation, as part of its service to the nursing profession’s role in patient care, established this student award to provide colleges/schools of nursing a national recognition program that they may use to recognize and celebrate nursing students who demonstrate commitment to care and compassion and make the nurse-patient connection that makes such a difference in the healthcare experience.
The DAISY Foundation hopes that this program will inspire and motivate students to provide the best clinical skill possible and to impact patients and families with human spirit and kindness.
To be nominated, the student must show compassion, advocacy and leadership – demonstrating outstanding attention at the bedside, exceptional care as a voice for patients, excellence in team collaboration and skill in the clinical setting.
