Nurse Receives Three Nominations for the August DAISY Award

Loretta Mitchell, RN, from our 6 South Irving Unit, is the latest recipient of the DAISY Award.L

Loretta was nominated three times this month, a testament to the care she provides to patients each day.

The first nomination was from a patient who had knee revision surgery. The patient said Loretta was diligent in explaining medication and understanding his pain level.

“She went above and beyond trying to keep me comfortable following the procedure,” the patient wrote.

When there was a discrepancy in the patient’s medicine, Loretta contacted the doctor on his behalf. Loretta then kept the patient informed of the situation.

“Her compassion was much appreciated. Anyone who is blessed to have her as their nurse is getting the best.”

Loretta was also nominated by a patient who was only in the hospital for 24 hours, but was comforted in knowing Loretta was providing care.

“She became my hero,” the patient wrote. “She was calm, sweet and encouraging. I was very impressed with all of the staff at Crouse, but Loretta was definitely number one.”

Lastly, Loretta was nominated by a patient for whom she cared twice; once in 2008 and again this year.

The patient said Loretta was kind, compassionate, caring and positive.

“Loretta is highly skilled and her depth of knowledge is evident. My family and I are grateful,” the patient wrote.

About the DAISY Award
In November 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes formed the DAISY Foundation as a way to express their profound gratitude to nurses for the work they do for patients and their families every day. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Pat died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. In 2015, Crouse became a DAISY-affiliated hospital and presents an award to a deserving nurse, selected by a committee, regularly throughout the year. The DAISY Award program at Crouse has been made possible through a donation from the Crouse Hospital Medical Staff.
