Crouse Hospital Presents Eight-Week “Mindful Living And Stress Reduction” Program Fall 2008


Integrative Medicine Education Program Begins Sept. 3

Ever wonder how to live a more balanced, stress-free life? Do you want to make changes that will enhance your concentration and overall sense of physical and emotional well-being? The Crouse Hospital Institute of Integrative Medicine is offering an eight-week interactive program, Mindful Living and Stress Reduction (MLSR), which will teach participants how to cope more effectively with everyday stressors and the world of uncertainty in which we live.

A free orientation class—a pre-requisite for joining the full program—will be held Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Marley Education Center, 765 Irving Ave., Syracuse. Parking is also free in the Marley Center Garage. The eight-week program begins Wednesday, Sept. 10 and runs through Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Marley Education Center. The course fee of $300 includes 16 hours of instruction; a full-day retreat on Saturday, Oct. 18; textbook; CDs; supplemental readings; and free parking in the Marley Center Garage. The MLSR program will be led by Pauline Cecere, LCSW, a psychotherapist in private practice in Cazenovia, who is on the clinical faculty of the Department of Medicine at Upstate Medical University. She earned her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan and has practiced psychotherapy since 1981. Cecere has trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction with Jon Kabat-Zinn, who was instrumental in expanding the practice of mindful meditation in the United States nearly 30 years ago through a program he developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The Crouse MLSR program provides training in a variety of meditative practices. Participants learn how to apply and integrate these practices into day-to-day living to reduce stress and improve the quality of life.

Insight meditation has been practiced for at least 2500 years, and Cecere has been teaching the practice in Central New York for over 10 years. “No one is immune to stressful events,” says Cecere, “but our reaction to circumstances determines how much we ‘suffer.’ Mindfulness is a meditative process that quiets the mind and releases physical distress.”

Through the Crouse Health Foundation, Crouse Hospital’s Institute for Integrative Medicine provides education about integrative medicine to the general public and the medical community.
