Crouse Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Receives $10,000 Gift from The Kara Fund

Foundation - Kara Fund - newsThe Kara Fund, a non-profit charity that seeks to provide comfort to seriously ill children and their families, recently presented the Baker Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Crouse Hospital with a $10,000 donation to refurbish its family lounge.

The unit handles between 800 and 1,000 admissions of premature and critically ill babies every year, so providing a place of warmth and peace for highly stressed families is a priority. “This donation will allow Crouse to provide visitors with a more comfortable place when taking a break from all the activity in the nurseries,” said Carrie Berse, president of the Crouse Health Foundation. “We are truly honored to partner with The Kara Fund for this project, which will benefit children and families across our region.”

The donation came from The Kara Fund’s Comfort Care Program, which was funded, in part, by the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation. It will go toward the purchase of new chairs, tables, a computer workstation, lamps, artwork and other items, with the intent of making the lounge more homelike for families visiting their babies.

“When a baby is facing a serious medical challenge, it puts the family in crisis,” said Mark MacDougall, president of The Kara Fund. “We understand the need for them to have a sanctuary that offers a calming ambience, gives them a place to relax for a few moments, meet visitors, or make phone calls, and offers siblings some activities to help them cope with the often long hours they’re at the hospital.”

The Kara Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Named in honor of Kara MacDougall, the Fund strives to enhance the quality of life of children with life-threatening diseases, and their families, by providing material items, goods and services that offer physical and emotional support for them in their time of distress.
