Each May, during Employee Recognition Week, one employee is honored with the Joan Fernbach Kingson Award, established in memory of former Crouse Hospital patient Joan Fernbach Kingson, a nurse and educator who passed away in 2001.
This morning, Crouse President and CEO Paul Kronenberg, MD, announced the 2013 honoree before many of her colleagues: Gabriella Davis, a Health Unit Coordinator on 8 Irving, our Labor and Delivery unit.
The family and friends of Mrs. Kingson established this award in her memory to recognize a Crouse Hospital service or technical worker whose special interactions with patients and families give vivid expression to the values of care which Mrs. Kingson was committed to in her work with children and families. Those values include treating each patient as an individual; respecting the social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical needs of others, and welcoming families, especially the young, into the caring process.
Employees are invited to submit nominations for the award, and a team of employees selects the annual winner. In keeping with the tradition of a surprise announcement, Dr. Kronenberg read from the nomination form those comments that made Gabriella a stand-out selection by the committee: This year’s recipient is the epitome of the Crouse mission, vision and values. Outstanding customer service skills make this person stand out as a true service leader. Every patient on 8 Irving is greeted in such a way that they feel welcomed and truly special; every family is made comfortable and kept informed. This individual is also adept at service recovery, and guests have noted she is seen as their advocate during stressful times. Our award winner always goes the extra mile to serve our patients, physicians and fellow staff. She considers it her job to act efficiently, but always to do so with a smile and a kind word for everyone. Our recipient is so in tune with her colleagues that she can anticipate others’ needs, even answering questions before they are asked.
This is not Gabriella's first recognition: She was honored at the Crouse Choice Awards a few years ago for tracking down a patient who phoned the hospital in distress — an action that truly may have saved that patient’s life.
Gabriella was quite surprised upon learning she was the recipent, as Dr. Eric Kingson thanked "Gabby" for her contributions to Crouse in a manner that honors his late wife's spirit. In addition to a framed award certificate and a cash prize of $500, she received an autographed copy of Dr. Kingson's book, Lessons from Joan: Living And Loving With Cancer, a Husband's Story.
The 2013 Kingson Award selection committee members included Nancy Williams (chair); Rev. Jim Stone; Judy Farrelly; Milan Howell; Stephanie Sullivan, Robyn Ouderkirk, and past Kingson Award recipients Helen Bain, Marie Hinds and Peter Neiner.
