From the Bedside to the Classroom: Spotlight on Pomeroy College of Nursing Professor Maureen Northrup, RN

By: Laurie Clark

It may seem like it was an obvious choice for Maureen Northrup to go to the Pomeroy College of Nursing at Crouse Hospital. After all, she has some strong family ties to the place.

Maureen’s grandmother, mother and aunt were all PCON graduates (Class of ’60, ’86 and ’87, respectively) and her grandfather and two cousins work here. In fact, her grandparents met while working at Crouse.

But it wasn’t until she decided to stay closer to home that she applied to the college. Upon graduating in 2014, Maureen accepted a position on our 4 North Irving unit.

“I love the team on 4 North,” she says. “I loved being there during  clinicals as a student nurse.”

Maureen worked on 4 North and, just as she had experienced as a student nurse, she acted as an orientor for new graduate nurses.

In 2020, she accepted a position as an assistant professor at the college.

“I love being able to work with students but I still occasionally pick up shifts on 4 North,” Maureen says.

As a mom, Maureen’s schedule at the college gives her a little more time with her own kids, and she enjoys being able to work with future nurses.

“Maureen is a well-respected graduate of our nursing program. She has continued her education and growth as a nurse at Crouse. Having Maureen return to teach at the College brings it full circle. It is gratifying to see Maureen share knowledge, skills and her passion for nursing with the next generation of nurses,” says Pomeroy College of Nursing Dean, Patty Morgan.

Maureen says it’s been inspiring to follow in the footsteps of many of her family members. And maybe those footsteps will continue…her 19-year-old brother is currently in college.

“I don’t think he’ll become a nurse, but you never know!”
