ICU Nurse Nominated by Crouse Employee for DAISY Award

Michelle Fenner, RN, from our Intensive Care Unit, has received the latest DAISY Award after a nomination from a fellow Crouse employee.

The nomination, written by Eric Kehoe, from our Emergency Services department, praised Michelle, saying it was apparent that she was a special nurse. Michelle cared for Eric’s mother after she suffered a fall in her home, resulting in a cervical fracture and subsequent cardiac arrest. She was stabilized at a local hospital and transferred to the Crouse ICU.

After tests, it was determined that unfortunately, his mother’s condition was terminal.
Eric wrote: “Michelle introduced herself and began her care of my mother. Apart from her obvious clinical knowledge and skills, Michelle showed empathy and compassion for not only her patient, but the whole family.”

He concluded: “As my mother’s time draws near, I can’t help but think what a blessing it had been to have Michelle as her nurse. She embodies every aspect of what a nurse should be.”

About the DAISY Award
In November 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes formed the DAISY Foundation as a way to express their profound gratitude to nurses for the work they do for patients and their families every day. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Pat died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. In 2015, Crouse became a DAISY-affiliated hospital, and presents an award to a deserving nurse, selected by a committee, regularly throughout the year. The DAISY Award program at Crouse has been made possible through a donation from the Crouse Hospital Medical Staff.
