Crouse Nurse Receives DAISY Nomination from a Retired Nurse

Danielle Petti, RN, from our 5 South Irving Unit, is the latest DAISY Award recipient.

Danielle was nominated for the award by a patient who is a retired nurse, who found herself in Danielle’s care after a surgical procedure.

The patient wrote that Danielle is an exceptional nurse, noting that she was not only attentive to her needs, but that she also demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills.

“Danielle gave me frequent reminders to use my spirometer, drink water and made sure I was eating a bit. She administered all medications in a timely manner,” the patient wrote.

Due to chronic neck pain, the patient was in a bit of pain from lying on her back after surgery. She commented that Danielle brought her a special, soft pillow to support her so she was not in as much pain.

“At the times when I did not require active intervention, Danielle would check on me to see how I was doing. She accompanied me to the bathroom. She even fixed my phone when my nephew reported he was having trouble getting through to me,” the patient went on to say.

The patient said that Danielle was smiling, pleasant and cheerful in all of their interactions. “At no time did I feel as though she was rushing,” the patient continued.

Before Danielle’s shift ended, she let the patient know she wouldn’t see her until her day of discharge. When that day came, Danielle stopped to see the patient and wish her well.

“The very fact that she took time out of her busy day to do this was extremely thoughtful and heartwarming,” the patient said. “Her doing so only emphasizes what a caring and outstanding nurse she is.”

In November 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes formed the DAISY Foundation as a way to express their profound gratitude to nurses for the work they do for patients and their families every day. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Pat died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. In 2015, Crouse became a DAISY-affiliated hospital, and presents an award to a deserving nurse, selected by a committee, regularly throughout the year. The DAISY Award program at Crouse has been made possible through a donation from the Crouse Hospital Medical Staff.
