First Steps Classes

Inviting a baby into your life comes with change and responsibility. There’s so much to know about having a baby and continuing care, and we want to make sure you’re as comfortable and as confident as possible. Even experienced moms and dads may want a refresher. That’s why Crouse offers extensive classes, information and assistance to help you and other family members get ready for the big day, as well as the adjustments that follow.

Kienzle Family Maternity Center Tours

This one session class (1 hr) is designed to give new parents a brief overview of what to do and where to go when you are in labor. Participants start off in Conference room A where there will be a brief presentation followed by a Tour of the Kienzle Maternity Center. This includes Labor & Delivery and the Postpartum floor.

Childbirth Preparation

This five-week course (one 2.5 hour class per week) is designed to help prepare you for the birth experience. It includes teaching about the process of birth, relaxation and breathing techniques, pain management options and how birthing complications can be safely managed. This course includes Cesarean Birth Preparation. A four-week class is offered at Chicks & Hens on Erie Boulevard in Dewitt.

Weekend Childbirth Preparation Seminar

For parents who can’t attend the five week Childbirth Preparation course, this seminar condenses the information into two sessions on a Friday evening (2.5 hrs) and all day Saturday (7.5 hrs). Tour included. Breakfast and lunch are served.

Weekend PLUS Seminar

This is a new Class designed to meet the needs of busy couples who want the 3 most popular First Steps Classes in one quick and easy weekend! Content covers all Childbirth Preparation, Breastfeeding and Baby Care in a 2 and a half day seminar. Friday evening and Saturday covers Childbirth Preparation. Sunday morning covers Breastfeeding and Sunday afternoon covers Baby Care.

Childbirth Refresher

A three-session class (2.5 hours each) for parents who have had a previous birth experience and want to refresh their skills and knowledge.

Pregnancy Prep PLUS

This five-week series (2.5 hours each week) includes the Childbirth Preparation Program as well as Baby Care and Breastfeeding class content. The first three weeks cover all of the Childbirth Preparation including a tour, exercise, process of birth, relaxation, breathing techniques and pain management as well as Cesarean birth. The 4th week covers breastfeeding including physiology and practical how to’s. The 5th week covers Baby Care including newborn care, signs
and symptoms of illness, choosing a pediatrician and safety. This class is designed for busy couples who want to get all three classes in one quick 5-week series.

Pregnancy Relaxation

This three-hour class is designed for pregnant women 13-40 weeks gestation and will teach massage, aroma therapy, breathing and relaxation as well as basic massage safety.

Siblings at Birth Class

This 2-hour class is designed to address issues and guidelines related to having children present during the birth. A certificate of completion from this class is required for each child you wish to be present at birth. A tour of the Kienzle Family Maternity Center is included.

Big Brother/Big Sister Class

This class is recommended for children 3-10 years old. A one-session class (2 hours) is a fun way to help prepare your other children for the arrival of the new baby—including a birthday party!

Breastfeeding Preparation

This one-session class (2.5 hrs) is tailored for mothers who plan to breastfeed their babies and/or those who are uncertain about that choice and want to learn more. The physiology of breastfeeding, as well as practical how-to’s will be discussed. Partners are encouraged to attend.

Baby Care Class

This one-session class (2.5 hrs) is offered to help prepare new parents and other caregivers (grandparents) for life with baby at home. Includes newborn care, signs/symptoms of illness, choosing a pediatrician and safety.

Two’s, Three’s and More: Pregnancy and Parenting with Multiples

This 2-hour class addresses medical issues associated with multiple gestations, delivery expectations/information, equipment and tips for caring for the family.

Pediatric First Aid & CPR

This 2.5-hour class offers general instruction on medical emergencies, injuries and environmental emergencies as well as prevention of injuries for children birth to 18 years. Pediatric CPR is covered. Recommended for parents, family members and caregivers. Please note that this is a non-certifying course.

C-Section Class

This one-session class (1.5 hours) is designed for mothers having a planned Cesarean section. It covers preoperative instructions, anesthesia, what happen during a C-section, role of the support person and post surgery recovery tips.

Chicks & Hens

The following classes are offered at Chicks & Hens, 3150 Erie Blvd. East, Syracuse.

 

Childbirth Preparation: This 4 session (2.5 hrs each) course is designed to prepare you for the birth experience. Topics include breathing techniques, relaxation, pain management, Cesarean birth and the birth process. You are encouraged to schedule a tour of the Kienzle Family Maternity Center as that is not included.

 

Breastfeeding: This one session class (2.5 hrs) is tailored to mothers who plan to breastfeed their babies and/or those who are uncertain about that choice and want to learn more. The physiology of breastfeeding, as well as the practical how‑to’s will
be discussed. Partner is encouraged to attend.

 

Baby Care: This one-session class (2.5 hrs) is offered to help prepare new parents and other caregivers (grandparents) for life with baby at home. Includes newborn care, signs/symptoms of illness, choosing a pediatrician and safety.
