Crouse Hospital Helps Hughes Magnet Students To Celebrate International Walk To School Month

Crouse Hospital and Hughes Magnet Elementary School will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Month on Wed., Oct. 8 at 9:15 a.m. Approximately 500 Hughes students and teachers, joined by Crouse employees, will begin the day with a half-mile walk around the school, located at 345 Jamesville Ave., in the city’s Outer Comstock neighborhood.

The event kicks off the annual Health is Hoppin’ at Hughes school-year long wellness program, supported by Crouse, for the school’s students, teachers, staff and families. Since 2004, Crouse Hospital has partnered with the Syracuse City School District to support health and wellness efforts. This initiative was started to further the hospital’s mission to promote community health, and allows hospital staff to share their services, experience and time for an important community program.

Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

In the U.S., International Walk to School Month is expected to include 5,000 schools from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 42 countries around the world.

Through the Health is Hoppin’ at Hughes program, Crouse Hospital helps to promote wellness among those in the school’s community with hospital employees volunteering as guest speakers on a variety of health topics and as staff for wellness events, the display of donated motivational posters throughout the school, and providing inspirational health announcements read over the public address system each day. Most recently, Crouse employees made personal donations to purchase more than 100 health related storybooks and manuals for the Hughes library.
