Integrative Medicine Education Program Begins Sept. 9
Various recent national studies show more and more Americans are feeling “stressed” these days by a myriad of stimuli, ranging from global uncertainties to making dinner. Worries about the economy, money and job loss are keeping 27% of U.S. adults awake at night, according to a national poll by the National Sleep Foundation earlier this year. Even in the best of times, we can feel stressed by the normal demands of everyday life. The key to reducing stress is not by trying to eliminate it, but by managing our reactions and the ways we relate to stressful circumstances.
Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 9, Crouse Hospital will present an eight-week course that teaches participants how to cope more effectively with everyday stressors and the world of uncertainty in which we live. Pauline Cecere, LCSW, will lead “Mindful Living and Stress Reduction,” 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings through the fall in the Marley Education Center, 765 Irving Ave. The course fee of $300 includes 16 hours of instruction; a full-day retreat on Saturday, Oct. 24; textbook; CDs; supplemental readings; and free parking in the Marley Center Garage. Cecere is a psychotherapist in private practice in Cazenovia who is on the clinical faculty of the Department of Medicine at Upstate Medical University. She earned her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan and has practiced psychotherapy since 1981. Cecere has trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction with Jon Kabat-Zinn, who was instrumental in expanding the practice of mindful meditation in the United States nearly 30 years ago through a program he developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The Crouse MLSR program provides training in a variety of meditative practices. Participants learn how to apply and integrate these practices into day-to-day living to reduce stress and improve the quality of life.
Insight meditation has been practiced for at least 2500 years, and Cecere has been teaching the practice in Central New York for over 10 years. “No one is immune to stressful events,” says Cecere, “but our reaction to circumstances determines how much we ‘suffer.’ Mindfulness is a meditative process that quiets the mind and releases physical distress.”
Through the Crouse Health Foundation, Crouse Hospital’s Institute for Integrative Medicine provides education about integrative medicine to the general public and the medical community.
