Crouse Hospital Service Worker Receives Kingson Award Honoring Service To Patients and Families

05/14/10

Random acts of kindness often go unnoticed. In the case of Joanna Brown of LaFayette, her pleasant nature, good deeds and kindness towards others while on the job were spotlighted when she was presented with Crouse Hospital’s 2010 Joan Fernbach Kingson Award.

Crouse President and CEO Paul Kronenberg, MD, and Dr. Eric Kingson, professor of Social Work and Public Administration and CPR Senior Research Associate at Syracuse University, recently presented the award to Brown. The annual cash prize is made possible by the family and friends of former Crouse Hospital patient Joan Fernbach Kingson, a nurse and educator who passed away in 2001. Eric Kingson was her husband and is the author of Lessons from Joan: Living and Loving with Cancer, a Husband’s Story.

The first Kingson Award was presented in 2005. Service or technical workers at the hospital are nominated by their peers and then selected by a committee for their involvement in the patient care process that gives vivid expression to the values of care that the late Mrs. Kingson was committed to in her work with children and families. Those values include treating each patient as an individual; respecting the social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and physical needs of others; and welcoming families, especially the young, into the caring process.

Brown, know by co-workers as “Jo,” has been a G.I. Technician in the hospital’s Endoscopy Department for over 35 years. A high level of technical competence is surpassed only by Brown’s commitment to quality care, patient safety and privacy and customer service. Always prepared to assist physicians and other staff, she also frequently assumes the role of patient advocate. In the nominations submitted, Brown was described as professional, a mentor, an asset to her department and a team player. “The ability to be totally present, totally connected to others — particularly patients — on a human level distinguishes our award winner,” said Paul Kronenberg, MD, Crouse president and CEO. “For her exemplary care and compassion, Jo Brown is truly deserving of the 2010 Kingson Award.”
