Kingson Award Winners
Congratulations to Interventional Radiology Technician Danielle O’Meal, who was selected as the recipient of the 2014 Joan Fernbach Kingson Award.
A nurse and educator, the late Joan Fernbach Kingson was a patient at Crouse in 2001, and her family and friends established this award in her memory to recognize a Crouse Hospital service or technical worker whose special interactions with patients and families give vivid expression to the values of care which Mrs. Kingson was committed to in her work with children and families. Those values include treating each patient as an individual; respecting the social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical needs of others, and welcoming families, especially the young, into the caring process.
The often unseen gifts of service and technical workers acknowledged by this award include the gift of careful listening, the simple joy of human-to-human conversation, the sharing of silence, or the warmth of touch. In giving of themselves so generously to others, awardees help sustain the essence of humanity and exemplify the best traditions of Crouse Hospital.
Paul Kronenberg, MD, (far right) and Dr. Eric Kingson (left), Joan’s husband and author of the book Lessons from Joan presented the award to Danielle, a dedicated, talented and well-respected member of the Miron Cardiac Care Center staff. According to Anthony Navone, MD (center), who nominated Danielle for the award, “she brings an added dimension to the job as the result of what colleagues describe as ‘unmatched empathy and tireless energy’ when it comes to the care of our patients and families.”
With a calm and compassionate demeanor, Danielle has the ability to make each patient feel as if they are the most important, and her co-workers note that she’s frequently heard saying “we have to do what’s best for the patient.” They say she is truly patient-centered, whether it’s by teaching others in her department, honing her own skills or going above and beyond to care for critically-ill patients and worried family members.
Through her commitment to our patients and her co-workers, a caring and positive attitude and great enthusiasm for what she does at the hospital, Danielle brings Crouse’s Mission, Vision and Values to life each day through her work.
The award is presented each May during Employee Service Recognition Week. Joining in the presentation was Crouse Health Foundation President Carrie Berse and Kingson Award Committee Chair Nancy Williams and members of the selection committee. Danielle’s name was added to the Kingson Award plaque that is housed in the display cases on 1 Memorial, and she received a $500 gift that comes with the award, presented for the 10th consecutive year. Dr. Kingson also presented Danielle with an autographed copy of Lessons from Joan.
