Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in American women. Fortunately, breast cancer rates have decreased to a stable level and there are now over 2.9 million survivors in the United States.
In late 2012, Crouse Hospital launched breast cancer support group, “Pink Therapy,” to provide local breast cancer survivors with the chance to interact while staying active and informed.
Lisa Miles, supervisor in the Physical Rehabilitation Services Department at Crouse, coordinates the support group meetings. A breast cancer survivor, Miles came up with the idea to start such a program after she couldn’t find a group in Central New York that met more often than quarterly.
The support group, free for breast cancer survivors, meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. and will next get together on Tuesday, June 25.
“The meetings help survivors make new friends who understand the trials and tribulations that come with a breast cancer diagnosis,” says Miles. "This program is a way for us to stay healthy while bonding and sharing our experiences in an open, comfortable setting.”
In addition to June 25, future support group meetings are planned for July 23, Aug. 27, Sept. 24, and Oct. 22. The regular meetings will last about an hour, but are flexible to accommodate attendees’ schedules and interests. The first 30 minutes of the meetings are devoted to an appropriate activity, which differs each month and can be enjoyed by women at any level of physical fitness. Sessions also include speakers on topics recommended by the members of the Pink Therapy Breast Cancer Support Group. Activities are as follows:
June 25 – The group will meet in the Marley Education Center, Room 219, and then walk a few blocks to the Rose Garden at the entrance to Thornden Park, where a discussion about nutrition will be held. Attendees are encouraged to bring a healthy recipe to share.
July 23 – A picnic will be held; location will be determined. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to pass.
Aug. 27 – A group seminar on stretching for healthy lymphatic flow and a discussion concerning future meetings will be held. The group will meet in the Marley Education Center, Room 219.
Sept. 24 – Guest speaker Desiree Odom will address the group about Reiki healing. The group will meet in the Marley Education Center, Room 219.
October 22 – A meditation session and discussion about reducing negative thoughts will be held. The group will meet in the Marley Education Center, Room 219.
Refreshments will be provided. Free parking is available at the Marley Education Center by entering the garage from the corner of Irving Ave. and University Pl. Pre-registration is not mandatory but is advised due to possible venue changes each month. To register, please call 315/472-2464.
