Mission

To promote, solicit, accept and provide stewardship for all voluntary dollars given in support of Crouse Health initiatives benefiting the health and wellness of the community.

Programs and Services

Founded in 1974, the Crouse Health Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation organized to encourage individuals, corporations, foundations and other groups to financially support the programs and efforts of Crouse Hospital . The Foundation is governed by a voluntary board of directors; these community members are responsible for the investment, management and administration of all funds and other property given or bequeathed to Crouse.

Gifts of any magnitude are gratefully accepted and donors enjoy a wide range of opportunities to meet their areas of interest and philanthropic goals:

  • Donors may restrict charitable gifts to a specific Crouse Hospital department or service, or earmark monies for the Crouse Health Foundation Endowment Fund. Unrestricted gifts are also encouraged to give Crouse the flexibility to use donations where they are needed most.
  • The meaning of a contribution may be enhanced by making it in memory of or in honor of a family member, friend or caregiver.
  • Donations may be made through one gift or a series of gifts pledged over time.
  • Gifts may be given outright or structured to maximize one's financial and estate plans through our Planned Giving Program. Opportunities such as our Pooled Life Income Fund, charitable trusts, gift annuities, bequests and IRA designations allow donors to plan their gifts based on personal situations; some options also provide donors with income for a term of years or life.
  • The Foundation can accept gifts of cash, life insurance and appreciated property (securities, real estate and, on a limited basis, tangible personal property).

In addition to the satisfaction received from supporting healthcare in our community, donors to the Crouse Health Foundation are eligible for income tax deductions and other tax incentives that exist under federal and state laws.

To assure that our donors have full confidence in our organization, the Crouse Health Foundation subscribes to the ideals and services outlined in the nationally-recognized Donor Bill of Rights (a copy of this document is available through the Foundation office). Additionaly, the Foundation does not exchange or rent any of its mailing lists.

Noteworthy Bits and Bytes

* The Crouse Health Foundation Endowment Fund, established in 1983, now has $17 million in assets.  The principal remains untouched, while a portion of the investment income earned annually is used to fund equipment, services and programs at Crouse.  Over the past 21 years, close to $14.3 million has been given to the hospital from investment earnings. For a list of items purchased for the hospital this year, click here.

*Another major accomplishment of the foundation was the $8 million capital campaign for construction of the Harry and Lillian Marley Education Center.  The Marley Education Center houses the Crouse Hospital School of Nursing, in-service and continuing education programs, and community service and health education programs.

* The  Kienzle Family maternity Center Campaign was a $5.6 million campaign to revitalize maternity and neonatal care services at Crouse Hospital.  The new Marjorie D. and Lester C. Kienzle Family Maternity Center, which opened in September 1999, provides mothers-to-be and their families with the best of all worlds: compassionate, personalized care and the availability of the latest medical technology.  Not only does this ensure the appropriate care for all levels of maternal and newborn patients, it utilizes the hospital’s resources most cost-efficiently.

* Operation: Innovation, a $6.5 million campaign for The Chris J. and Marshia K. Witting Surgical Center at Crouse Hospital, is currently underway. The 90,000 square-foot facility, which will include 14 inpatient operating rooms plus ancillary space, will position Crouse Hospital to support technological advances and innovative procedures while providing the best in patient care. The new Witting Surgical Center is scheduled to be completed in June 2011, and more information is available in the project abstract.

Your support will allow Crouse Hospital to remain a leader in general and specialty surgical services. Click here to contribute to further this project and Crouse Hospital's mission.

  • Tribute Evening — Friday, October 29, 2010

The Physicians of Neonatal ASsociates of CNY The Physicians of Neonatal Associates of CNY will be recognized as this year's Crouse Health Foundation's Tribute Evening honorees. Drs. Steven Gross, Ellen Bifano, Thomas Curran, Bonnie Marr, Michelle Bode, Beverly Roy, and Boura'a Bou Aram play an integral role in the achievements of Crouse Hospital. Their success story will be shared at Tribute Evening 2010 on Friday, October 29 at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center, Oncenter.

Tribute Evening 2010 will feature an extended reception, gourmet dinner, tribute presentation, and entertainment by MARY WILSON of the Supremes. The highlight of the evening will be the salute to the Physicians of Neonatal Associates of CNY.

Crouse Hospital (and its predecessors) has been taking care of premature infants since 1944. Dr. Margaret Williams pioneered neonatal care as we know it today by serving as the director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (22 bassinets) created in 1974. Under her leadership, Crouse became one of the nation's first Regional Perinatal Centers (NYS Level III) in 1975 through a $2.2 million Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant. By 1980, the regional infant mortality rate had dropped 40%. Dr. Steven Gross became the Director of the NICU in 1985.

In 1994, Neonatal Associates was formed becoming the exclusive provider of Neonatal Services at Crouse Hospital. With the opening of the Kienzle Family Maternity Center in 1999, an expanded NICU (51 bassinets) was opened and the name was changed to the Walter R. G. Baker Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The nurseries were named for Dr. Margaret Williams. In 2003, Crouse Hospital's NICU was upgraded to a NYS Level IV facility.

Currently, Crouse Hospital is licensed at 57 bassinets and cares for babies born as young as 24 weeks gestation and weighing just 500 grams. The neonatologists provide coverage 24/7, 365 days per year caring for 800 - 1,000 infants annually. Since 1985, over 21,000 babies have been patients in Crouse's NICU. As the Regional Perinatal Center, Crouse serves 19 birthing affiliates in 15 counties providing transport services to our NICU. The Physicians of Neonatal Associates have teaching appointments in Pediatrics at SUNY Upstate Medical University and are national research leaders. They are actively involved with the Ronald McDonald House, March of Dimes, and other related organizations.

Proceeds from Tribute Evening 2010 will further Crouse Hospital's mission to provide the best in patient care and promote community health. Funds acquired will be used to purchase special equipment, underwrite new initiatives, and fund educational programs and scholarships.

General tickets and patron opportunities are available by contacting the Foundation. Tables of ten and individual attendees are welcome. Souvenir program ads are available at various prices. For more information, please contact Phyllis Devlin at the Foundation office at (315) 470-7008 or via email.

  • Open the reservation order form (here), and please return to the address, fax or email included within.

Crouse Classic Golf Tournament Crouse Health Foundation's ninth annual Crouse Classic Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, July 19, 2010 at the Bellevue Country Club. Both morning and afternoon shotgun starts will be offered in a Captain and Crew format. The day will conclude with a reception, dinner and awards presentation.

Proceeds from the event support children's services at Crouse Hospital. Tournament proceeds have purchased much-needed equipment for the hospital's Kienzle Family Maternity Center, including the Baker Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a New York State regional referral center for premature and critically-ill infants for the seventeen-county region it serves.

12th annual SADA Charity Preview - Wednesday, February 10, 2010

SADA Charity Preview The Syracuse Auto Dealers Association (SADA) Charity Preview, an annual event held in conjunction with the association's auto show, raises funds to benefit the children and families of Central New York. Over $1.5 million has been raised for local charities during twelve SADA Charity Previews.

Crouse Health Foundation was selected to once again be a beneficiary of the SADA Charity Preview held on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 at the Oncenter Complex. As guests mingled among the newest vehicles, they were treated to great food, drinks and musical entertainment throughout the Oncenter Complex. Held the night before the Auto Show opens to the public, attendees leisurely viewed all the latest models local auto dealers had to offer amid a festive atmosphere.

Net proceeds from Crouse ticket sales were used to purchase an ECLS Fluid Warmer for use in Crouse Hospital's Kienzle Family Maternity Center. ECLS, a life-saving process, places the sickest of near-term infants on long-term modified heart lung bypass. During this procedure, the infant's blood is removed from his/her body and circulated through a large circuit and an artificial lung that provides oxygen and removes carbon dioxide. Because the blood is exposed to room temperatures and can become cold, the ECLS Fluid Warmer is used to reheat the oxygenated blood before it is returned to the infant, so that the infant's temperature is not compromised.

For more information and/or to purchase SADA Charity Preview 2011 tickets in support of Crouse Health Foundation, please contact Phyllis Devlin at 315/470-7008, or via email.
