Crouse Hospital Received Top National Award for Workplace Excellence
Crouse Hospital was selected as the 2008 recipient of Workforce Management magazine’s Optimas Award for General Excellence. The General Excellence award is the top award given out of 10 presented annually by Workforce Management, the leading human resources industry publication in the U.S.
To receive the General Excellence award, a company must meet at least six out of nine standards established by the publication. These include innovation, financial impact, managing change, competitive advantage, partnership, ethical practice, global outlook, service and vision. The purpose of the Optimas awards is to emphasize the importance of excellent workforce management practices. Open to companies from around the globe, the award seeks to accomplish this by recognizing 10 role model companies each year that challenge conventional view in HR practices including employee and labor relations, benefits, staff development and engagement and organizational development activities.
“Optimas winners are distinguished as having used creative, bold and unique approaches toward solving specific business challenges," stated Workforce Management editor John Hollon. “Crouse is doing some interesting things and we think it’s a pretty big deal.” Crouse’s recognition was based on efforts over the past several years in transforming its workforce culture. The hospital emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in late 2003 and has since regained lost market share, significantly increased employee and physician satisfaction and dramatically improved its financial health. In 2006, Crouse was named “Business of the Year” by the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce.
“Achieving the Optimas General Excellence award is a significant honor for our hospital and for our staff. It recognizes the work of all employees in maintaining a sharp focus on our mission, vision and values. I’ll be proud to accept the award on behalf of our entire staff,” stated hospital President and CEO Paul Kronenberg, MD.
The Optimas judges considered numerous factors in awarding the top Optimas honor to Crouse, including several metrics that have seen marked improvement over the past several years. For example, the termination rate for new employees after one year of service decreased from 49% in 2001 to13% in 2007. The percentage of employees who say they would recommend Crouse as a place to work increased from 27% in 2004 to 77% in 2007. Both of these statistics exceed national benchmark standards for the healthcare industry. Additionally, Crouse has been the only Syracuse hospital to gain market share over the past two years.
Past Optimas General Excellence award winners include Intel, Google, General Motors, Levi Strauss, Sysco Corp, AT&T, McDonalds and Texas Instruments. Other health systems, like Baptist Health in Florida, and major companies, like Disney, have won Optimas awards, but Crouse is the first hospital in the award’s 18-year history to receive an Optimas in the General Excellence category.
Dr. Kronenberg accepted Crouse’s Optimas award at Workforce Management’s annual awards ceremony in New York City on Oct. 28, 2008.
